AALA stands for African American Lutheran association. It is a church wide organization in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) with chapters throughout the United States.

The Metropolitan New York Chapter seeks to provide a conduit to the Metro New York Synod for the contributions and concerns of African American Lutherans; to identify and promote the training of African Americans for clergy and lay leadership within the ELCA; and to foster a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the unique culture and heritage African Americans bring to the church.

Membership is open to all Lutherans in the Metro New York Synod who support the purposes of the organization and agree by its By-Laws.

Church–wide AALA is a recognized entity in the ELCA under the jurisdiction of the Commission for Multicultural Ministries. The Metro New York Chapter enjoys the support and participation of the Metro New York Synod Bishop in many of its activities. Those activities include an ecumenical commemorative Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. service in January and a cultural Black History program in February of each year.

Meetings are held bi-monthly at host churches, usually on the fourth Sunday in February, April, June, September and the Annual Meeting in November.

Grants are awarded to eligible seminarians and persons studying for lay leadership roles in the church at the Martin Luther King, Jr. services from the James Heyligher Scholarship Fund. The Standing Committees are: Program, Scholarship, Membership and Fund Raising, The Metro New York Chapter is one of the most active in the church-wide organization.
